What does it mean to create a font pairing?
To create a font pairing, one must obtain different fonts in order to create an image that is pleasing to the eye. Different font styles, sizes, and colors are used to create an eye-pleasing image. In addition, the fonts used must compliment each other in order to create an eye- engaging image.
What are the four assignments you chose to do? Write the name of the assignment and describe your design for each.
My first assignment was to use the saying "Float like a butterfly, Sting Like a bee". Only three fonts were allowed to be used and the only colors allowed were black and white. I chose to make my background black, rather than the typical white background because I felt that it provided greater contrast. Also, I think the white font on a black background draws the audiences attention to the words.
My second assignment was to use the saying "26 letters, endless possibilities". Similar to my first assignment, only three fonts were allowed to be used. Three colors and white were allowed to be used and the words "endless" and "possibilities" must have been emphasized. As a result, I chose fonts that drew attention to the words "endless" and "possibilities" in order to create emphasis. I also made the number 26 large because I feel that is the key component to the whole saying.
My third assignment was to use two fonts that complimented each other to name a place. I chose Monte Carlo, Monaco because I liked the movie "Monte Carlo" and I wish to visit there someday. Some requirements of the assignment were to only use a white font on a high quality picture. Obviously, I chose a picture of Monte Carlo because it went along with the theme.
Finally, my fourth assignment was to pick any saying of my choice and execute it using only four fonts. In addition, a high quality photo was also allowed to be used. I chose the saying "Not all those who wander, are lost". I chose this saying because I've always personally loved it. I chose a map themed picture because it went along with the travel/wanderlust theme.
Which assignment would you say is your BEST font pairing and why?
I would say my best assignment was the "Not all those who wander are lost" because I believe that the fonts compliment each other in beautiful ways. The use of tall/skinny, and fat/short fonts are very pleasing to the eye. Also, I think the composition of the words make it easier to read.
Which assignment would you say is your Least Successful font pairing and why?
I would say my least successful one was the "26 letters, endless possibilities" assignment because I don't love the composition I organized the words. Also, I found it very difficult to only use 3 colors and that the use of no pictures made the board seem very empty.
How would you describe the font pairing process? What makes a font pairing so difficult?
The font pairing process is an intense, grueling process that cannot be done in one day. Many people think that it is easy to create fonts that compliment each other but, it is not. The font pairing process is difficult because there are so many fonts to choose from and it takes a long time to decide which fonts work best together.
